A LITTLE ABOUT SALEM CHURCH: 1) LOCATION: Salem Church is located at the east end of Burrowsville
at the corner of Rt. 10 (James River Drive) & Rt. 611 (Lebanon Rd.) Adjacent to the Ed Hatch Portait Studio, Salem Church
is easily recognized as "the white church with the red roof." (Click on "Directions" at top of page
for a map.) 2) FOUNDING: Land was given for church in 1868; the Church was built in 1869. 3) MEMBERSHIP:
There were 35 members at earliest known record in 1884; Current membership 78. 4) CHURCH HISTORY: Originally
founded as a Methodist Protestant Church" in 1868, but now a congregation of "The United Methodist Church."
Salem joined the Prince George in 1940. Other churches of the charge were Mt. Sinai (Now a Lutheran Church near PG High
School), Sycamore, Newville, Trinity (Disputanta), and Gary's Church. (Three denominations, the "MPC," the "Methodist
Episcoplal Church" and the "Methodist Episcopal Church, South," merged to form "The Methodist Church"
in 1939. With another merger in 1968, of the "Evangelical United Brethren Church" and "The Methodist Church"
formed "The United Methodist Church." 5) NOTABLE FEATURES: Red metal roof, stained glass window over
the transom of front door that says "Salem Methodist Protestant Church," lovely sanctuary windows, a marble WW-I
memorial marker, cherrywood celtic cross, a New Fellowship hall, a new picnic pavilion named in honor of the late Rev. Julius
Lee, and an old cemetary. Salem is the most easterly church in Prince George County. 6) MINISTRIES: Salem
is notable for it's community involvement. The annual chicken fry on the first Saturday of June raises money for local benevolences
and needs. The church has a outstanding Puppet Ministry involving children and youth regularly in worship celebrations.

This stained glass window over the transom of the front door indicates the history of Salem Church as "Salem Methodist
Protestant Church," noting its denominational affiliation until 1939 prior to church union with other Methodist Churches.
It is the only church of M.P.C. history in the region.
The famous Salem pickin' n' chicken fry is held the first Saturday in June. Good Gospel music and aromas fill the air during
this fun(d) raiser. Proceeds from the annual event go towards both church and community chairities. The next chicken fry
will be held Saturday, June 8th, 2002 from 5pm-7pm. Mark your calendars!
